INTERN² NMWAIT

NMWAIT provides a unique internship opportunity for traditional and non-traditional students, ages 15–25, to learn about leadership and professionalism while gaining valuable, hands-on experience that will last a lifetime.


NMWAIT's mission is to educate and train the next generation of leaders who have a strong sense of self-awareness, the capacity to work well with others, and are civically and socially involved.


We believe that everyone has the capacity for leadership and that it can be developed if it is constantly nourished. We create healthy communities by cultivating and uniting a diverse group of leaders who are dedicated to the common good. 


All students interested in interning with National Minority Women Association in Transportation are required to complete an application Request Form.

INTERNSHIP | LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

Please contact the Internship Coordinator for further information and/or to obtain an application.

  • Provide an ardent, hands-on learning experience in the many dimensions of leadership. 
  • Through a variety of programs, students will be given information and skills. 
  • Challenge students to participate in group and individual projects to obtain "real-world" skills and exhibit their knowledge. 
  • Require students to use seminars, presentations, and other activities to share their newly acquired competencies and leadership abilities with their peers and the community.


  • Demonstrate your leadership abilities through dynamic group activities. 
  • Demonstrate understanding of business and personal ethics. 
  • Demonstrate proper business etiquette. 
  • Develop a stronger sense of self-awareness. 
  • Participants are well-versed in the proper image and show themselves in a professional manner. 
  • individual leadership capability should be enhanced and developed 
  • Develop motivational and communication skills. 
  • Demonstrate organizational abilities, such as planning, time management, and goal setting. 
  • Demonstrate your budgeting and management skills. 
  • Develop a working grasp of legislative procedures.


Interns are mostly assigned organizational tasks, while certain outreach and clerical tasks are assigned as well. 

  • Assist in the organization and implementation of community engagement activities. 
  • Assist with content development, recording, and reporting for the industry. 
  • Assist with research and maintain track of bills affecting the sector. 
  • Assist in drafting communications, mailings, answering inquiries, and writing newsletters. 
  • Assist with the design of flyers and visuals for advocacy purposes. 
  • Assist with the management and creation of new material for each of our social media sites (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.). 
  • Assist with marketing to outside providers, both in person and electronically, to assist us develop our referral network. 
  • Assisting in the evaluation of community needs 
  • Attending meetings of the board of directors and several committees


  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Must be at least 15 years of age by the closing date of the announcement


All required documents listed below, that are applicable to you, must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time (ET) on the closing date of the announcement. 


The following documents must be submitted for your application package to be considered complete. It is your responsibility to ensure all required documents are received within the required time frames. 


Our office cannot be responsible for incompatible software, illegible fax transmissions, delays in the mail service, system failure or downtime, etc. 


Failure to submit required, legible documents may result in loss of consideration.


  • Resume that includes the following information:
    • contact information;
    • completed course work (unit/credit hours);
    • academic standing/GPA;
    • work/volunteer experience including the work schedule and hours worked per week as well as dates or employment; and title, series, and grade, if applicable;
    • supervisors name, phone number and email address for each work period listed and whether or not we may contact them for reference checks; and
    • references.
  • Current transcripts: 
    • an unofficial copy is sufficient with the application; however if selected, an official college transcript will be required. 
      • Transcripts MUST include the students name, name of the school, current GPA/academic standing, past and current coursework, and degree program. 
      • If your school’s transcripts or documentation do not provide all the necessary information listed above, you should include additional official academic documentation that meets the requirements.
  • Proof of Enrollment or Class Registration and documentation that states projected graduation date*


*Proof of Enrollment may include a screenshot of the semester class schedule, an official letter of enrollment, or listed on official transcripts. The document should show the academic institution where the student is actively enrolled in courses, the degree or certificate program, and enrollment in at least a half-time status (as defined by the academic institution).


  • Summer - (May - August) application deadline: June 30, 2022
  • Fall - (September - December) application deadline: August 15, 2022.
  • Spring - (January - April) application deadline:      December 15, 2023


  • Intern² NMWAIT is a non-paid mentorship
  • The program is available all year, lasting 10 weeks over the summer and the fall and/or spring semesters. 
  • Interns must work a minimum of 10 hours each week, with exceptions made for academic scheduling. During the summer, interns must work at least 10–20 hours each week.
  • Once a month, there may be an organized activity for the interns to participate in as a group.
